OO! – Workshop Impressions
During our inspiring OO!-workshops within the first international conference “Antigypsism and Film” in Berlin last week the Hungarian filmmakers Eszter Hajdú (director of JUDGMENT IN HUNGARY) und Sándor Méster (producer of JUDGMENT IN HUNGARY) had focused on politically sensitive filmmaking about and with Roma as well as on strategies of making discrimination and oppression visible.
Furthermore German filmmaker Insa Onken (director of SAFET TANZT) completed the different facets of looking at the issue of othering and belonging by talking about possibilities of empowerment of film protagonists and the filmic mediation of an appreciative encounter between viewer and protagonist.
OPPOSE OTHERING! happily united these different perspectives. It was a great experience!

Conference “Antigypsism and Film”
OPPOSE OTHERING! is proud and happy to organize a practical workshop in the scope of the conference “Antigypsism and Film” in Berlin from 21. till 23. February 2018. This first international conference on the topic has been organized by the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and will illuminate the topics of representation, ethics and perspective from academic as well as activist point of views.
Our workshop will focus on practical aspects of filmmaking with or as a member of the minority. We are very happy to welcome Tayo Jessica Onutor, Eszter Hajdú, Sándor Mester and Insa Onken as artists working on these topics.
OPPOSE OTHERING!@ MOLDOX in Moldova
After presentations at Astra FF in Sibiu last year and this summer in Berlin, we brought OPPOSE OTHERING! to Cahul in Moldova this September. MOLDOX – the film festival for social change in Cahul invited OO! to give a workshop on the mechanisms of othering and belonging.
We had the chance to meet filmmakers willing to cast a more sensitive eye on topics of human rights and social concern. Fifteen participants were encouraged to speak about responsibility, exclusion and inclusion, experiences and their relations to their protagonists. This workshop with its atmosphere of exchange, enabling deeper reflection on othering, will hopefully have an impact on their future projects.

About Othering and Belonging
The Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society of the University of Berkeley and OPPOSE OTHERING! share the idea to support a society where belonging is valued while othering is opposed. An annual conference as well as an online publication titled “Othering and Belonging. Expanding the Circle of Human Concern” present initiatives, activists, scholars and artists that want to include instead of exclude. In their Spring 2017 edition they also featured an article about OPPOSE OTHERING!. Powell, Director of the Haas Institute and Professor of Law, African American and Ethnic Studies.
OO! AT GOEAST 2017
What is othering? Who does it? Are we even aware of our own behaviour as audiovisually creative people? Socially engaged filmmaking, positioning yourself, giving a voice to your protagonists instead of speaking about them, being aware of technical and tactical aspects in aesthetics, portraying a topic in as many facets as possible, empowering, belonging … all of this and much more was discussed, debated and questioned during six intensive days with four experts, 21 young filmmakers and also with 10 filmmakers from last year’s edition. At the end, the OO! jury, consisting of Cottbus festival director Bernd Buder, film director Askold Kurov and LGBT activist and film critic Mima Simić, awarded five teams with production grants of 4.000 Euros each. To an exciting second generation!

Panel discussion “Us and Them? Otherness and Othering”.
In the cross-section discussion filmmakers from Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Slovakia discuss possibilities and problems of socially engaged filmmaking, exclusion and belonging. With Mira Fornay, Eszter Hajdú, Sándor Mester, Denis Shabaev and Petr Vaclav.
Lecture with Andrés Nader (RAA Berlin). Andrés Nader, director of the Regional Centre for Education, Integration and Democracy gave a lecture with the title “Reflecting on the process of Othering”.
2-day workshop “How to deal with Politically Sensitive Projects?” Eszter Hajdú and Sándor Mester, Hungarian documentary filmmakers, introduce the OO! Tandems to the handling of politically sensitive film projects.
The international jury: Predrag Azdejković, Andrea Kuhn and Yulia Serdyukova announce the winning projects of the OO! Production grants.
Presentation training – how to pitch your project: “Stripped to the bone” with Cathy de Haan, film curator and expert for creative writing.
